The Power Of A Wise Woman’s Words
On day 39 of 2007, I’m focusing some attention to the possibility that a pending history-making class action lawsuit filed by a galvanized group of women against WAL-MART will become yet another warning to the myopic men who still don’t get it. Maybe now, the parties now standing on the wrong side of this historic lawsuit will finally understand the reasons why it’s time to “wake-up.”
Since it’s Black History Month, I’m also feeling compelled to share the following excerpt from the powerful speech Ms. Sojourner Truth delivered during the Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio in December 1851. Hopefully, the power of this wise woman’s profound words will help to substantiate my honest belief that a woman is, and has always been, a man’s most valuable resource.
“And Ain’t I A Woman”
Well, children, where there is so much racket there must be something out of kilter. I think that ‘twixt the negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what’s all this here talking about?
That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain’t I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man — when I could get it — and bear the lash as well! And ain’t I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain’t I a woman?
Then they talk about this thing in the head” what’s this they call it? [member of the audience: "Intellect"] That’s it, honey. What’s that got to do with women’s rights or negroes’ rights? If my cup won’t hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn’t you be mean not to let me have my half measure full?
Then that little man in black there, he says women cant’ have as much rights as men, ’cause Christ wasn’t a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him.
If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them.
Obliged to you for hearing me, and now old Sojourner ain’t got nothing more to say.
If more men honestly believed God has graciously gifted us with the presence of our women, maybe the sexual predators stalking our women, and the abusive men traumatizing our women will choose to love, honor and respect all our women until they begin to feel safe and secure for the first time. Impossible? Not if our generation of real men divinely destined to achieve greatness have enough faith to honestly believe that
“Impossible is still nothing to God.”
Challenging? Yes!! Nevertheless, the faith-based choice to help our galvanized generation accomplish what may appear to be an impossibility is yours alone to make. How many of you are ready and willing to push past the pain and do whatever it will take to make this big dream come? Matters not the colour of your skin, you’re always welcome to join our critically thinking team as we walk together in peace and work together as one for the common good of humanity’s global village. Take the first step with all who stand hand in hand with me by faith until God gifts us with what we need to make man’s most valuable resource feel safer and more secure than ever before. Enjoy.
Can it be that this historical year will be the first time humanity’s unfairly treated unsung sheroes will finally become honored, respected, and financially compensated on the same level all the deceived men who mistakenly believed they ruled the world? I hope so. Do you? If not, only God will know what must happen to inspire our generation of great men to face our deepest fears and embrace Change.
Can it be that one too many men will keep choosing to treat great women like you as second-class citizens until enough of the right people start speaking truth to power in love? Only God knows how many powerful people –who are sitting in lofty positions of influence and privilege – must start losing enough sex discrimination lawsuits to miss all the profits Lady Justice subtracted from the billions of dollars women kept taking from their pant’s pockets without asking for a man’s permission to do so. Think about it.
